2022 Peugeot 308 detailed: New Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Hyundai i30, Kia Cerato and Volkswagen Golf rival emerges with striking design

Peugeot has revealed the third-generation 308 small hatchback, with the new model set to bring its striking design to Australian showrooms in the first quarter of next year.

The 308 is now in keeping with Peugeot’s latest design language, and in some regards, it even moves the game on, with it the first model to wear the new ‘lion’ badging.

Like its predecessor, the new 308 rides on Peugeot’s EMP2 platform, albeit an updated version, with its wheelbase extended by 55mm, to 2675mm, to deliver rear occupants more legroom, while overall length is 4360mm (+110mm).

Speaking of the interior, it’s highlighted by the latest take on Peugeot’s signature i-Cockpit, with it combining a 10.0-inch central touchscreen with a 10.0-inch 3D digital instrument cluster, both of which are powered by a new multimedia system called i-Connect.

Voice control is now always-on, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support is now wireless, and two devices can now be connected to Bluetooth. And cargo capacity is 440L but increases to 1323L with the rear bench stowed.

The 308’s suite of advanced driver-assist systems has also expanded to include autonomous emergency braking with intersection assist and pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, traffic sign recognition, driver attention alert, high-beam assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

While local pricing and specification will be confirmed closer to its launch, the 308 is available with two plug-in hybrid powertrains with both combining a turbo-petrol engine with an 81kW electric motor and a 12.4kWh battery.

One option has a 110kW engine, produces a combined 132kW and has an electric-only range of 60km (WLTP), while the other has a 132kW engine, develops a total of 165kW and has a zero-emissions range of 59km, positioning it slightly above the average warm hatch.

Internal-combustion engine options include tunes 81kW and 96kW of a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder, and a 96kW 1.5-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder.

Six-speed manual and eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmissions are available for the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Hyundai i30, Kia Cerato and Volkswagen Golf rival, with drive sent to the front wheels no matter the combination.
