2024 Mazda CX-5 follows Toyota RAV4, Nissan X-Trail and Subaru Forester in dropping diesel from powertrain line-up

Mazda Australia discontinued the diesel-powered CX-5 from the local mid-size SUV line-up, while also upping pricing for the remaining petrol variants for next year.

The Mazda CX-5's price rises range from $370 for most grades, up to $620 for the Touring, however, there are also changes to equipment to help ease the sting.

The base, front-drive G20 Maxx CX-5, the only one available with a 115kW/200Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine, is now priced at $36,560 before on-road costs (+$450) and scores wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as well as touchscreen capabilities for its multimedia screen.

Next rung up the 2024 CX-5 ladder is the G25 Maxx Sport, which uses a 140kW/252Nm 2.5-litre petrol engine and moves up $370 to $40,280 for the front-drive variant and $42,780 for the all-wheel drive, but doesn’t feature any spec changes.

The G25 Touring, which is now $44,920 now sports 19-inch blacked-out alloy wheels and a full synthetic leather (called Maztex) interior, replacing the half suede from before.

The GT SP is available with the aforementioned 2.5-litre petrol engine or a 170kW/420Nm 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, positioned at $50,280 (+$370) and $52,780 (+$370) respectively, and now features a hands-free powered tailgate and unique grille.

The Mazda CX-5's price rises range from 0 for most grades, up to 0 for the Touring.

Likewise, the top-spec Akera is available in G25 and G35 form for $52,470 (+$370) and $54,970 (+$370) and also ditches the woodgrain interior trim for “attractive new interior inlays” that contrast the Dark Russet Nappa leather seats.

For reference, the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine no longer available in the CX-5 range produced 140kW/450Nm, and was available in Touring Active and Akera form priced at $47,600 and $55,100.

Mazda has also removed the Touring Active grade from showrooms, which was priced at $44,600.

The top-spec Akera ditches the woodgrain interior trim for “attractive new interior inlays” that contrast the Dark Russet Nappa leather seats.

The Mazda CX-5 has emerged as the third best-selling mid-size SUV in Australia after nine months of trading, amassing 16,895 new registrations.

The CX-5 trails the hot-selling Toyota RAV4 (22,388) and Mitsubishi Outlander (17,762), but is ahead of the Hyundai Tucson (16,173), Kia Sportage (11,113) and Subaru Forester (12,113).

Though diesel powertrains once dominated the mid-size SUV segment, only a handful of models remain with an oil-burning option, including the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.
