2025 Polestar 5 electric car revealed, and the Audi e-tron GT rival doesn't even have a rear window

Polestar has called dibs on November 9 as the day to celebrate itself, and shown off the Polestar 5 sans camouflage for the first time.

Known as ‘Polestar Day’, the self-congratulatory celebration saw customers, investors and press gather in Los Angeles where all of the electric car brand’s current models were present.

However, it’s the Polestar 5 grand tourer that has garnered the most attention as the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan rival has only been seen under wraps until now.

Details on the model are still thin on the ground, but the sleek five-door liftback sedan looks ready for production, which is targeted towards 2025 after the release of the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUVs next year.

Most notable design detail is the lack of a traditional rear window, as the sloping glass roof simply joins with the rear hatchback without any way for drivers to peak out the rear.

It is expected that the Polestar 5 will feature a camera-based rear-view mirror set-up, though, in keeping with its cutting-edge credentials.

Also announced at the event is a partnership with StoreDot to bring extreme fast charging (XFC) to the Polestar 5 prototype due in 2024, which can add 160km of driving range in just five minutes.

The charging technology can be integrated into existing batteries, but neither Polestar nor StoreDot have gone into detail with exactly how it works.

Polestar Day also saw the brand confirm the batteries for its Polestar 5 will be sourced from South Korea’s SK On.

Other announcements on the day include production of the Polestar 4 expanding outside of China to Busan, South Korea in the latter half of 2025, as well as more advanced autonomous driving functions coming to the Polestar 4 thanks to Mobileye and Luminar.
