More power than Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series! 2024 GWM Tank 500 4WD pricing and specs confirmed

Chinese brand GWM has announced pricing and specifications for the largest, most expensive and newest model to join its Australian line-up - the Tank 500 off-road SUV.

The Tanks 500's entry-grade Lux is now available for $66,490 drive-away, with deliveries of the seven-seat SUV expected to start before the middle of 2024.

The price point will be an enticing factor for those looking for a luxurious, large, off-road-capable and cut-price alternative to the Toyota LandCruiser 300, which starts at a list price of $94,301.

Standard features in the Lux include 18-inch alloys wheels, LED headlights, rear privacy glass, sunroof, side steps, power and heated front seats, a 14.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and three-zone climate control.

Above the Lux is the top-of-the-range Ultra, which is priced at $73,990 drive-away. That's similar to the price of a Ford Everest Sport ($72,490 BOC). The standard features list for the Ultra includes Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated and massaging front seats, heated and ventilated second row outer seats and a 12-speaker Infinity sound system.

Built on a ladder-frame chassis and equipped with full-time four-wheel drive with high- and low-range should make the Tank 500 a capable off-road vehicle.

And while it's yet to be tested against the likes of industry hardcore off-road benchmarks such as the Nissan Patrol and Toyota LandCruiser, the Tank 500's credentials look impressive.

The Tank 500 pairs a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission to a 2.0-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, with combined outputs of 255kW and 648Nm. This outguns the LandCruiser 300's twin-turbo V6's 227kW but falls short of the big Toyota's 700Nm of torque.

GWM says that a combined fuel consumption of 8.5L/100km can be expected. An 80-litre fuel tank should give the Tank 500 a range of approximately 940km.

Size-wise, the Tank 500's dimensions are almost the same as the LandCruiser's at 5078mm in length, 1934mm wide and 1905mm tall.

GWM says the Tank 500 has a wading depth of 800mm, which is 100mm more than the LandCruiser 300, and has a braked towing capacity of 3000kg, 500kg less than the LC300.

The Tank 500 joins the smaller Tank 300 in GWM's off-roader line-up.

GWM is also the parent company of Haval, which has a range including the Jolion and H6 SUVs, and the Ora electric hatch.
