Porsche Taycan confirmed for 2020 Australian launch

Porsche's first all-electric model will reach Australian shores within 12 months of its international on-sale date.

Speaking with local media today in Sydney, Porsche's Australian product and smart mobility boss Ingo Appel confirmed the timing, while also sharing details about the Zuffenhausen brand's plans for Australian charging infrastructure.

Look beneath the off-road details, and this is how the finished Taycan will look.

Aside from its ability to partially restore charge via regenerative braking, home charging and destination charging at dealerships or other end points, a network of highway charge locations are planned to initially cover the east coast of Australia, parts of WA and Adelaide.

These will be established in partnership with a third-party supplier and in conjunction with at least one other OEM brand, and take advantage of the Taycan's unique-for-now 800-volt system's ability to charge quickly via 350kW charging.

Porsche claims such charge points will be capable of restoring a couple of hundred kilometres of driving range in less than ten minutes, 400km of range in 15 minutes, or 80 per cent charge within 20 minutes. Whether there will be any cost to consumers for such charging is still being discussed.

Today's announcement follows other tech details revealed in June and July of the still yet-to-be revealed Taycan (pron. tie-carn).

The battery system is claimed to offer over 500km of electric range on the European cycle, while capable of generating 440kW and accelerating from 0-100km/h in well under 3.5 seconds, and 200km/h in 12 seconds.

The Taycan was previewed by the Mission E concept at the Frankfurt motor show in 2015, which is making its southern hemisphere debut today at a brand pop-up display in Barangaroo, Sydney. The 'Future Lab' display will be open to the public until October 21.

The concept is sharing space with a classic 1962 356, along with interactive displays demonstrating Porsche heritage and its future with e-performance technology.

Our next taste of Mission E came with the clearly almost production-ready  but off-road themed Cross Turismo concept in Geneva this year, and the finished production model is tipped to make its first appearance at the next Geneva show in March.
