Tesla Model Y not for you? 2024 Polestar 4 electric car goes on sale in Australia, but when do deliveries start?

The Polestar 4 is now on sale and could steal hearts and money away from Tesla's Model Y.

Is the Tesla Model Y taking too long to get here? Well, its rival, the Polestar 4, has just gone on sale in Australia with deliveries expected to kick off in August.

The fully electric mid-size SUV joins the Polestar 2 which has been on sale in Australia since 2021.

Pricing for the Polestar 4 SUV will start at $81,500, before on-road costs, making the entry grade Model Y look like a bargain at $65,400.

That said, the entry level Polestar 4 is more on a par with a mid-spec Model Y with a large 100kWh battery and a range of 610km (WLTP).  This grade is powered by a single motor making 200kW and 343Nm.

Sitting above this is dual-motor Polestar 4 which lists for $93,050. This grade also has the 100kWh battery but power is delivered via two motors front and rear producing a combined 400kW and 686Nm. A 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds makes the Polestar 4 dual motor the fastest model the company has produced.

“The introduction of Polestar 4 into all our markets through the course of 2024 is key to our success, adding this third model to our line-up. Polestar 4 tackles the premium performance class in the D-SUV segment.

As with the Polestar 2, the Polestar 4 has a distinctive design, but what sets the 4 apart is the lack of rear window.

"Polestar 4’s innovative interpretation of an SUV coupé offers great interior space and a stunning appearance,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

The challenge in seeing what’s behind you is solved using a roof-mounted camera that sends an image through to a digital rear view camera.

Optional packages will also be available including the Performance Pack for the dual-motor variant that adds 22-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, sports suspension tuning, and gold-coloured cosmetic elements.

Other notable features include cabin materials made from recycled plastics and floor carpets produced from reclaimed fishing nets.

In 2023 the brand sold 2463 Polestar 2s in Australia, and the arrival of the Polestar 4 is expected to be followed by the Polestar 3 in Australia later this year.
