Toyota Australia is recalling 48,000 Corolla and Rukus vehicles to check installation of the passenger side front airbag inflator.
According to Toyota, under the Takata airbag recall campaign, the inflators were replaced, but not all were installed correctly.
The airbag assembly may not be connected correctly to the inflator which can lead to the airbag failing to deploy in an accident.
Corolla hatches and sedans built between March 2007 and December 2010, and Rukus models produced from February 2010 to December 2012, are affected.
Toyota will contact owners of impacted cars by mail, detailing next steps on inspection and potential rectification work, which will begin this month.
Toyota dealers will carry out a 15 minute inspection to determine whether the inflator needs correction. If so, re-installation repairs will take 1.5 hour, and owners won't be charged for the work.
Toyota owners with questions about the recall should contact Toyota's recall campaign helpline on 1800 987 366.
