BMW has confirmed pricing and specification for its long-awaited 2 Series coupe successor, which offers a rear-or all-wheel drive alternative to the front- or all-wheel-drive 1 Series hatch and 2 Series Gran Coupe.
The 2 Series Coupe will hit dealers before the end of 2021 for a 2022 model year, and the range kicks off with the rear-drive 220i which wears an MSRP of $59,900.
The 220i is powered by a 135kW/300Nm turbocharged four-cylinder engine and drives the rear wheels via an eight-speed torque converter automatic. According to BMW, it will complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 7.5 seconds and will come with the M Sport package (consisting of the M Sport steering wheel, sports seats in synthetic leather and suede trim, and synthetic suede headlining) as standard for the Australian market.
Other features include M Sport suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, variable steering, LED headlights and tail-lights, a head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and a 10.25-inch multimedia screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support with wireless smartphone charging, ambient interior lighting, and M interior finishes in aluminium.
Stepping up to the top-spec M240i at an MSRP of $89,900 brings proper power from a version of the brand’s renowned inline-six turbocharged engine, producing 285kW/500Nm. Interestingly the M240i is all-wheel drive only via an eight-speed automatic transmission and can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.3 seconds.
The M240 gains M Sport brakes and spoiler, adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, an electric sunroof, leather interior trim, electric front seat adjustment with lumbar support and heating, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, and a premium Harmon Kardon 14-speaker sound system.
While the M240i comes fitted with the works, the 220i is able to be fitted with the ‘Enhancement Package’ ($3900) which adds your choice of paint colour (instead of the standard white), a sunroof, and 19-inch alloys, and the ‘Driver Assistant package’ ($3400) which includes tyre pressure monitoring, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control, enhanced park assist features, and a ‘drive recorder’ system.
Either grade can be chosen with the ‘Comfort Package’ ($3400 for 220i, $1500 for M240i) which adds electric adjust and heated seats for the 220i and a heated steering wheel in both grades, the ‘M Sport Plus Package’ ($2500 for 220i, or $1200 in M240i) which adds M Sport brakes, and the full suite of M Sport aesthetic touches, or the ‘Executive Package’ ($3000 for 220i, or $2800 for M240i) which adds remote engine start, a heated steering wheek, tyre pressure monitoring, enhanced alarm system, sun protective glazing, Harman Kardon audio, and the drive recorder system.
Premium metallic paint costs $1700 across the range, and there are a total of five alloy wheel designs to pick from. There are also six interior trim choices (five of which cost $2860), and three highlight trim choices.
The 2 Series Coupe has also expanded in dimensions over the outgoing car, now 105mm longer, 64mm wider, and 28mm lower than its predecessor, with the brand needing to bring components and technology from the much larger 4 Series in order to facilitate the new coupe’s drive layout.
The full-fat performance experience in the form of the M2 is still set to be revealed in 2022.
