Automobili Pininfarina PF-Zero 2020: New details revealed

Pininfarina's first full production car will be a carbon-fibre and glass rocketship capable of clipping 100km/h in less than two seconds, hitting a top speed north of 300km/h, and that will serve up 500km of driving range from a single charge.

That's the promise from company executives today as the information drip-feed surrounding the PF0 (or Zero) continues ahead of the car's sneak-preview at the Pebble Beach Concours d' Elegance.

We say 'preview' rather than 'unveiling', as the PF0 will be revealed exclusively to prospective customers at the USA event, with the rest of us having to wait a little longer.

In a teaser clip released today, company boss Paolo Pininfarina details the trip his grandfather (founder Battista Pininfarina) took to Detroit in the 1920s, where Henry Ford asked him to become his company's chief designer. It was an offer Pininfarina declined, instead choosing to focus on building his design firm into a stand-alone car brand.

It might have taken some time, but that dream is about to become reality.

"We are looking forward to presenting the PF0 design model created by Pininfarina SpA to clients and specialist retailers over the coming days," says Automobili Pininfarina CEO, Michael Perschke.

The famed Italian design house is promising its first complete car will offer "extreme levels of technology", with an exterior sculpted from lightweight carbon-fibre and glass.

Expect an entirely driver-focused cabin, including two angled screens that frame the steering wheel, and a head-up display that takes the place of a traditional driver's binnacle. An EV architecture rumoured to be borrowed from Rimac will provide the promised performance.

“Pininfarina cars are renowned for their interior design as much as the exterior, and this isn’t simply limited to the layout of the dash and the quality of the materials," says PF0 designer, Luca Borgogno.

"How an occupant feels in the car at all times, how he or she changes their point of view from inside to outside without distraction, and how they relate to information sources, is as important to us as Pininfarina's exterior design principles.”
