Too soon? Last orders for petrol-powered 2024 Porsche Macan in Australia as new electric car version gets closer to showrooms as BMW iX3, Tesla Model Y rival

The end has come sooner than many thought,  and by that we mean Porsche discontinuing the petrol-powered Macan mid-sized SUV, with the German sports car maker telling CarsGuide production for Australia will stop before the end of this year.

The news comes just a week after Porsche revealed its fully electric Macan to the world that'll go up against EV rivals such as the Tesla Model Y and Polestar 4.

When asked what the news of the electric Macan means for the petrol version, Porsche Cars Australia told us that it would mean the end of the road for the combustion model.

"Production of the petrol Macan, bound for Australia, will conclude in Q3 2024," a spokesperson for Porsche Cars Australia said.

"The current models will be available for factory orders up until approximately mid-2024 at the latest, subject to customer demand and available production. Beyond approximately mid-2024, customers may still be able to purchase stock vehicles, subject to availability."

The current Porsche Macan line-up starts at $93,800 for the entry-grade SUV with a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine making 195kW, and the range tops out at $141,700 for the GTS boasting a 2.9-litre V6 turbo petrol engine making 324kW and 550Nm.

So when does the electric version arrive in Australia?

The upcoming electric Macan will make up to 470kW and 1130Nm. A 100kWh battery will ensure a range of more than 500km.

"The local launch of the new all-electric Macan is planned for Q4 2024," the spokesperson told us.

The Macan has become the best-selling model for Porsche with 2925 sales for 2023. In comparison the brand's 911 hero car was responsible for just 558 sales last year.

The Porsche Macan first went on sale in 2014 and for the past ten years has competed against the likes of BMW X3, Audi's Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, among others.
